The Lone Ranger

The original Lone Ranger idea was conceived by George W. Trendle, a Detroit businessman.  He developed the idea during the Great Depression in 1932.  The first episode aired on Detroit radio stations on January 30, 1933.  It gained popularity as a radio show for over ten years.  The show was then developed as a TV series in 1949 through 1957, starring Clayton Moore (as the Lone Ranger) and Jay Silverheels (as Tonto).  Although others played the parts over the years, the TV series is best remembered with these two very popular actors.

The background of the story of the Lone Ranger was not well known to many.  John Reid was one of six Texas Rangers chasing an outlaw and his gang.  All the Rangers were killed except for one that was badly wounded.  He was found by an Indian (Tonto) who nursed him back to health.  When the Ranger woke up, Tonto explained to him that he was the only Ranger left, “You lone Ranter.”  From that point, the Lone Ranger dedicated his life to fighting for justice and Tonto promised to be his faithful companion.

People remember the opening narration ended with the phrase “Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear…The Lone Ranger Rides Again!”  At the end of each episode, one of the characters comments that they never found out the hero’s name, “Who was that masked man?”  The response was always, “Why, that was the Lone Ranger!” as he and Tonto ride away.  The “cavalry charge” finale of Gioacchino Rossini’s William Tell Overture was the theme music for the series.
